Summary

Golgotha is a one-of-a-kind original painting by Anne Reid Artist, painted in acrylic on canvas at 24 × 36 in. A tall, luminous cross rises through a deep purple-brown-orange atmosphere, with white and crimson-red light streaming down over figures gathered below. Drawn from Matthew 27 and John 19:18.

Artwork Statement

Golgotha is drawn from Matthew 27 and John 19:18 — the crucifixion, at the place called the Skull. The color carries its own layer of meaning I only fully recognised after painting it: the red is the blood of Christ; red against white is the torn veil; the purple and crimson together echo the priestly garments and the tabernacle. I didn't set out to paint theology in color, but it was there when I looked again.

Colo\r & Mood

  • A deep purple-brown-orange atmosphere surrounds a tall, luminous cross at upper center
  • White and crimson-red light streams downward from a warm gold-orange halo.
  • Pale white forms sit lower center-right; a kneeling figure in purple robes appears at lower left.
  • The mood is monumental and redemptive — weighted with sacrifice and revelation together.

Design Notes

  • A strong vertical beam of light organises the composition from top to bottom.
  • Dark silhouetted figures stand within the light stream at the base, one figure kneeling.
  • Deep green-dark terrain grounds the lower right; a pale path runs through the center.
  • Reads as architectural and monumental — meant to be encountered rather than glanced at.

Original Details

  • Title: Golgotha
  • Year: 2017
  • Medium: Acrylic on canvas
  • Dimensions: 24 × 36 in.
  • Orientation: Vertical
  • Inventory No.: ART-G-201705
  • Availability: Studio original, available (one of a kind)

Where It Works

  • Sanctuaries, chapels or dedicated worship spaces, given its direct crucifixion subject and monumental scale.
  • Galleries or grand entryways with height, where its vertical light column can be seen from a distance.
  • Leadership or reflection spaces where its weight is appropriate rather than incidental.

Scale & Placement Guidance

At 24 × 36 in., Golgotha is a statement-scale piece best given a solo wall with enough distance for the full vertical light column to be seen at once.

Quality, Care & Display

Display away from prolonged direct sunlight and avoid persistent dampness or extreme temperature shifts. Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth; do not use household cleaners on the painted surface. Consult a professional conservator for damage or deep cleaning.

Notes from the Studio

I didn't plan the color theology in this one — I only saw it after, looking back at what I'd already painted.

Summary

Golgotha, print is an open-edition fine art print based on the original 2017 acrylic painting by Anne Reid Artist. A tall column of crimson and white light streams from the Cross through a deep field of violet, amber, and dark earth — figures standing below, skulls at their feet, the way now open. The work speaks to the crucifixion, the tearing of the temple veil, and the access Christ opened into the presence of God.

Artwork Statement

I began Golgotha in 2017 in the community studio in Oakville, working in my usual prophetic abstract process — choosing color, moving with the paint, and allowing the marks and forms to emerge before I fully understood what the painting was saying. I was working with purple, red, and deep shadow, following the movement of the Spirit before knowing the image.

The first thing that struck me was a cluster of pale, rounded forms near the bottom of the canvas. They looked like skulls. That is where the name came from: Golgotha — the place of the skull.

The painting became a meditation on the Cross, the blood of Jesus, and the tearing of the temple veil. The red and white streams descend like blood and light — sacrifice and access opening at the same moment. The figures near the base are not characters in a scene. They are anyone who has stood before the Cross and had to decide whether to come close, stay distant, or turn away.

The most important theological meaning of the work is the veil. When Jesus died, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom — not by human hands. That tearing meant that through the blood of the Lamb, the way into communion with God was opened. The figures in the painting appear to be moving toward or through that opened place. The skulls remain below. The movement is upward and inward — toward the presence of God.

I have since stood at the traditional site of Golgotha in Jerusalem. The painting did not come from that visual memory — it came from what emerged on the canvas. But having stood there, I understand more deeply what the painting holds.

"He was pierced for our transgressions… and by his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)

"When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, 'It is finished.'" (John 19:30)

Color & Mood

  • Central colors: crimson-red and luminous white — the vertical light stream from the Cross
  • Upper halo: warm gold-orange — radiance and glory at the top of the Cross
  • Surrounding field: deep violet, amber-brown, and dark earth — holy weight, mystery, and atmosphere
  • Lower register: pale white rounded skulls, green-dark terrain, lavender-white path
  • Mood: reverent, solemn, and quietly powerful — gravity and invitation held together
  • Spiritual tone: sacrifice, access, mercy, and the way opened through the blood of Christ

Design Notes

  • Vertical 2:3 composition based on the original 24×36 in painting
  • Strong central axis — the Cross and light column read from across the room before the detail resolves
  • Soft edges and layered glazes keep the light from feeling harsh — the blaze is warm, not aggressive
  • Figure scale is intentionally small — emphasizing awe over narrative detail
  • The dark field right of centre balances the light column, giving the composition authority and weight
  • The skulls at the lower base are subtle at distance but visible on close inspection — carrying the full meaning of the place

Where It Works

  • Sanctuary, chapel, or church space where the Cross is the rightful centre of the room
  • Prayer room, study, or counseling office where the meaning of access and mercy anchors the space
  • Living room or hallway with neutral walls that can hold a strong vertical focal point
  • Entryway where a vertical piece can stand as a quiet declaration at the threshold of a home
  • Ministry space, church office, or retreat centre where the Golgotha theme carries ongoing significance

Notes from the Studio

I began Golgotha with color and movement, the way I begin most paintings. The skulls appeared first, and the name came with them. Then the light, the cross, the figures, the veil. I did not plan any of it. I followed what I saw emerging, and the painting showed me what it was carrying. That is the nature of this kind of work — it flows from the inside out, before the mind has words for it.
